Size: Adults reach 8–25 mm

• Body plan: Elongated, segmented body lacking a carapace

• 11 pairs of phyllopodia for locomotion, respiration, and feeding

• Stalked compound eyes and a median naupliar eye


Conservation Status


• Considered regionally vulnerable in parts of Western Europe due to Loss of temporary wetlands

• Agricultural intensification

• Urbanization and road maintenance


• Listed as “Near Threatened” in France’s Red List of freshwater crustaceans A
